Hoover Dam

About a half hour drive from downtown Las Vegas is the Hoover Dam.

At 726 feet tall, Hoover Dam was an amazing accomplishment especially considering it was built in the 1930's. It was one of many public works projects that helped pull the US out of the great depression.

You can take a tour in which you get to see the dam's generators. One of the things they said on the tour is that electricity generation is not the most important function of the dam. Most important is the distribution of the Colorado River water to the surrounding states.

Hoover Dam is difficult to photograph because of it's size. To get an idea of the size, first check out the visitors center in the upper left of the top picture. Then, look at the second picture and see how tiny the people are that are standing on top of the cylindrical part of the visitors center.

The last picture is the view down the Colorado River from standing on top of the dam.
