In San Jose, is theWinchester House (Official website). It was built by the widow of the owner of the Winchester gun company. Some say that the woman was driven to keep building onto her house by a fear of ghosts. But, upon further research, it seems the more probable explanation is that after the loss of her husband she needed something to do (and to have people around.) Since she was a headstrong millionaire, she could have people build onto the house at her whim. Since she was not an architect, there was no plan. The result is a house that has windows with structures built onto the other side (seen here), as well as stairs leading into a closed off ceiling, and 160 rooms all for one person and her servants.
