Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat

Nothing symbolizes Cambodia like Angkor Wat. It is a temple originally built to the Hindu god, Vishnu in the 1100's. This and many other temples were found in the jungle in various states of ruin. Scholars have pieced together knowledge of an ancient civilization that once thrived.

Angkor Wat is a 65 meter tall, very symmetric, very ornate, masterpiece. Inside, a mind boggling amount of intricate carvings cover the walls (a sample is on the Apsara Dance page).

The only way to get to the upper enclosure is to climb those extremely steep stairs shown in the second picture (70 degrees steep). But, one is rewarded with panoramic views.

When we were at the top, the elderly woman in the third picture showed Andrea and I how they worship at the buddhist shrines that they have recently installed. She spoke very little english but seemed enamored with Andrea.
