River with Mangrove Trees

Yellow Banded Mangrove Snake

Mangrove Forest

Mangrove trees live in a climate that most trees cannot: fresh water from shallow rivers meets the ocean salt water that flows in on the tides.

We took a boat tour up a river in a mangrove forest in Indonesia. Since tourism is low at the moment, the tour guide on this little boat was talking to 2 people - Andrea and me.

As we cruised slowly up the river, we saw three kinds of mangrove trees, some tasty looking (but poisonous) "Pong Pong" fruit trees, macaque monkeys, and snakes.

The second picture shows a poisonous yellow banded mangrove snake slithering in a tree as we floated by. We also saw pythons sleeping in the trees overhead.

In the video - On the way back out, we quickly sped through the forest (and occasionally had to duck to keep from getting hit by overhanging trees).
