Cave in Franz Josef Glacier

Glacier climbing boots

Pick Axe on Franz Josef Glacier

Glacier Fun

The surface of the Franz Josef glacier is steep and has many valleys and caves. In the first picture, I crawl through an ice cave that was open on both ends.

The tour guide company provided everyone with jackets, socks, boots, and metal spikes that attach to the bottom of the boots. The metal attachments were like small crampons. The took a little getting used to, but they gripped the ice surface nicely. We didn't slip at all.

While taking pictures, I dropped my lens cap. It fell into a three inch wide groove in the ice. I went to pick it up and it slid horizontally into a little hole in the ice. I (and others) tried reaching into the hole to find it: no luck. Finally, I borrowed the guide's pick axe and took some mighty swings at the Franz Josef glacier. I carved huge chunks out of the ice but the lens cap was no where to be found. The glacier swallowed it up.
