Pancake Rocks in New Zealand

Pancake Rocks

On the west coast of New Zealand is a peculiar rock formation called Pancake Rocks. Here, layers of limestone and mudstone are carved into tall stacks by the crashing waves.

The waves carve out deep caves. Eventually, the rising tide breaks a hole in the top of the cave which creates a "blow hole." Then, when the waves flow in, water shoots up through the hole and high into the air.
