Bangkok Markets
The
main thing to do in Bangkok is go to the markets and haggle for your
best deal. At the street markets you can buy anything from food to art,
from books to clothes, from trinkets to exotic animals. The favorable
exchange rate brings people from all over Asia here to shop.
The first picture is (I believe) a "Pygmy Slow Loris." I don't
know whether this species is endangered or if it is legal to trade but
there it was for sale.
This second picture was food (I guess). This large pan was full of 5
cm (2 inch) long grubs wriggling and squirming around. Tasty! We also
saw plenty of fried bugs and other things we wouldn't eat.
One had to figure out what the going rate was before bargaining for
something. This was easy since the things we bought were available at
many booths. One instance where we didn't know the cost was at the fried
banana stand. I walked up and said, "how much?" Vendor: "10
baht." I replied, "Okay, I'll take two." Luckily, she
only seemed to understand the word, "okay." She proceded to
put about six fried bananas in a bag and handed it to me. Apparently
the whole bag costs 10 baht. Silly me, I would have paid 20 baht for
2 bananas, and I ended up getting 6 bananas for 10 baht. Food was generally
very cheap in Bangkok.
