Transportation
The
"tuk-tuk" is an infamous way to get around Bangkok. The drivers
are notorious for charging much more than they should. We decided to
try, just for the experience. "How much to Wat Arun?" we asked.
Driver: "40 baht." Andrea responded, "40?!" since
we knew this was much more than a brand new car taxi would charge (even
though 40 baht is about 80 cents in US currency). The driver immediately
said, "Okay 10 baht" so we got in. After driving about 50
meters, the driver stopped, turned to us and said, "I just want
to stop by the Thai Center on the way." We already knew his scam:
He drops us off at a jewelry store before taking us to our destination
and in return the store gives him a kickback. When we refused to let
him take us there, he refused to take us anywhere. |
