Wat Arun

Wat Arun closeup

Wat Arun

This wat (buddhist collection of buildings) is named after Aruna, the Indian god of dawn. It is right next to the river (you can see it in the boat picture on the transportation page). The main "prang" is 79 meters (260 feet) tall. You can see Andrea at the top of the first set of stairs. Each set of stairs is progressively steeper representing the greater difficulty of reaching higher levels of existence.

The second picture is a closeup of the demon figures that are just above Andrea in the first picture. You can start to appreciate the ornate complexity of this giant structure. It is decorated completely with broken pieces of porcelain.

The third picture is closer yet. It's a closeup of one of the flowers that is next to the demon figures. Each piece of porcelain is a finely decorated work of art.
